Chemistry Class in Mr. Arman’s Class

Attending Mr. Arman’s Chemistry Class by Maya

Today we went to Chemistry class with most of our host students and learned some Organic Chemistry with Mr. Arman. From the moment Mr. Arman walked in the door, we were able to witness the students’ excitement for the teacher’s entrance and their passion for learning. Mr. Arman arranged an exciting experiment involving building ICUP nomenclature structures out of straws, balloons, and tape. It was really exciting to compete against the other tables in the class to see who could build the fastest and most accurate structure. It was truly a pleasure to get to learn something new with the Beijing 101 students and also work with them to build something new.

The Cooking Class with Mr. Liu and Ms. Li – Cook Chinese Dumplings in the School Cafeteria – May 29, 2014

Chinese Pastry Class by Jennifer

Today after breakfast we learned how to make dumplings from one of the chefs, Mr. Liu at Beijing 101 High School. We rolled the dough out, put the filling onto the dough, and closed it up creating little dumplings. We all had a lot of fun making them; there was definitely flour everywhere. After we finished making the dumplings we went to observe a class and also give a presentation on life at Westminster. Meanwhile, in preparing lunch, the chef cooked the dumplings for us. At lunch we enjoyed the fruits of our labor, and the dumplings turned out to be delicious and one of our favorite foods so far on the trip.

Chinese Art Exploration – The Chinese Calligraphy with Ms. Zhang, May 30, 2014

Chinese Traditional Art Class by Jennifer

Today was kind of low-key, and we spent the whole day at Beijing 101 doing various activities. Two of those activities were Chinese knot weaving and Chinese calligraphy. For Chinese knot weaving we made these really cool colorful bracelets using a simple knot. It was pretty relaxing I must say. For the calligraphy we learned about some of the history of how and why Chinese characters look the way they do today. Then we tried our hand at actually writing some of the characters. In my opinion, I thought we all did pretty well. It was definitely harder than it seemed though!
